Recruitment of an external member of the House of Commons Commission

House of Commons Commission Non-Executive Director 

The House of Commons Commission is looking to recruit an external member. This is an important role operating at the heart of our democratic system.

The Commission is responsible for the administration and services of the House of Commons, including the maintenance of the Palace of Westminster and the rest of the Parliamentary Estate.  The role of the Commission is to give strategic leadership to the House of Commons Service – the official service which supports the House of Commons, its Committees, Members and the public.  The House Service, of around 1,800 people, provides a politically impartial service to all Members of Parliament to support them in their duties.  It supports the legislative and scrutiny processes of the House and helps to make the House and its work more accessible to the public to increase awareness and understanding.  The Commission consists of the Speaker of the House (Chair), Leader of the House, Shadow Leader of the House, four backbench Members elected by the whole House and drawn one each from the three largest parties and the remaining Members, Clerk of the House (who is the Head of the House Service), Director General of the House of Commons and two external members.  More information about the work of the Commission is available on Parliament’s website (www.parliament.uk).

The successful candidate will have board-level or equivalent experience of developing and delivering the strategic direction of a complex organisation with a demonstrable commitment to diversity and inclusion, as well as strong operational and organisational leadership.  She/he will have transformation skills and the ability to work collaboratively and inclusively in a multiple stakeholder environment, including experience of change and human resources issues.

Candidates should not be active members of a political party, and will be subject to restrictions on political activity once appointed.  Security clearance is an ongoing requirement of the role as is the right to work in the United Kingdom. The House of Commons is not able to sponsor visas.

The successful candidate will need to be willing to dedicate up to three days a month (excluding August) to the service of the House of Commons.  The Board Member will be required to attend at Westminster for the monthly Commission meeting and for other meetings and familiarisation visits by arrangement.

Appointment will for three years, with the possibility of extension.  An annual fee of £20,000 will be paid.
